The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is one of the best electric cars available in the UK. Its 800V architecture, fast charging speeds, and spacious interior have made it a favourite with EV owners. But when it comes to everyday home charging, you need the right cable to get the most out of it.
The Ioniq 5 has a Type 2 charging port located on the rear right side of the vehicle. It supports AC charging at up to 11kW on a three phase supply, or 7.2kW on the single phase supply that most UK homes have. For DC rapid charging, the car uses CCS and can accept up to 220kW, but rapid chargers always have their own cable attached.
What cable does the Ioniq 5 come with?
Hyundai supplies a Mode 2 cable for charging from a standard 3-pin socket. It is slow, around 2.3kW, and intended as a backup rather than your primary charging method. For regular home charging from a wallbox, you need a Mode 3 Type 2 to Type 2 cable.
Choosing the right cable for your Ioniq 5
A 32A cable rated at 7.2kW single phase will deliver the maximum charge speed on a standard UK home supply. If you have a three phase supply at home or at work, a 22kW three phase cable would be worth considering, but this applies to a small percentage of UK properties.
For length, consider where your charge port sits. The rear right position on the Ioniq 5 means that depending on which way you park, the cable may need to reach across the back of the car. A 5-metre cable can feel tight in this situation. A 7-metre cable gives you comfortable reach regardless of your parking angle.
Home wallbox compatibility
The Ioniq 5 works with every untethered Type 2 wallbox on the market. Whether you have an Ohme ePod, myenergi Zappi, Pod Point Solo, Easee, Andersen, or any other brand with a Type 2 socket, a standard Type 2 to Type 2 cable is all you need. Plug one end into the charger, the other into your car, and charging begins automatically.
Public charging with your Ioniq 5
Many public AC chargers require you to bring your own cable. Workplace chargers, supermarket chargers, and hotel destination chargers often have an untethered Type 2 socket. Having a cable in your boot means you never miss an opportunity to top up. The Ioniq 5 is famous for its rapid charging speed, but for topping up while you shop or park at work, AC charging with your own cable is the everyday reality.
Keeping things protected
The Ioniq 5 charge port flap does a reasonable job of keeping debris out when closed, but while charging, the port is wide open. Rain, dust, and even insects can find their way in. A magnetic charge port cover provides a waterproof seal around the port and cable while plugged in. It takes seconds to attach and folds flat when not in use.
