The MG4 is one of the most popular electric cars on UK roads. It is affordable, practical, and has become a go-to choice for drivers making the switch from petrol or diesel. If you have just picked one up, or you are about to, one of the first things you will need is a charging cable.
Every MG4 has a Type 2 charging port on the rear left side of the vehicle. This is the standard connector used across the UK and Europe, so any Type 2 to Type 2 cable will work with your car. You do not need a car-specific cable or a special adapter.
What cable comes with the MG4?
MG includes a Mode 2 cable with the car in some cases. This is a 3-pin plug cable designed for emergency use. It charges at around 2.3kW, which means a full charge from empty takes over 24 hours. It works, but it is painfully slow and not intended for daily use.
If you have a home wallbox installed, you need a separate Mode 3 Type 2 to Type 2 cable. This is the cable that connects your MG4 to your charger and delivers the full 7kW charge speed your car supports on a single phase supply. Most wallboxes in the UK are untethered, meaning they have a socket rather than a built-in cable. You plug your own cable in.
What specs should the cable have?
For the MG4, a 32A single phase cable rated at 7.2kW is the right choice. This matches the maximum onboard charger speed of the car. A 16A cable would work but would charge at half the speed, so there is no reason to go lower.
Cable length matters more than most people think. A 5-metre cable covers basic setups where the charger is mounted close to where you park. A 7-metre cable gives you the flexibility to reach comfortably, even if you park at a slight angle or the charge port is on the far side of the car. Most MG4 owners find 7 metres is the sweet spot.
Using your cable at public chargers
Your Type 2 to Type 2 cable is not just for home use. Many public AC chargers across the UK are untethered and require you to bring your own cable. Supermarket chargers, workplace chargers, and destination chargers at hotels or car parks often have a Type 2 socket. Keeping a cable in your boot means you are always ready to plug in.
Rapid chargers at motorway services have their own tethered CCS cable, so you will not need yours there. But for everyday charging, your Type 2 cable is essential.
Protecting your cable and charge port
The MG4 charge port is reasonably well protected by its flap, but when charging in rain, the port is fully exposed. Moisture can build up around the pins over time and cause corrosion or charging errors. A magnetic charge port cover is a simple accessory that sits over the open port while you charge, keeping water out.
A carry bag keeps your cable clean and protected in the boot. A wall mount keeps it tidy in the garage instead of coiled on the floor where it picks up dirt and becomes a trip hazard.
The MG4 is a brilliant car. Pair it with the right cable and accessories and you will have a seamless charging experience at home and on the road.
