Public charger operator Gridserve and motorway services operator Moto have opened Wales’ first ultra-rapid charging hub.

The charging hub has six ultra-rapid 350kW chargers and is part of the Gridserve Electric Highway, located at junction 47 on the M4 at Moto Swansea.

It is the first charging hub of its kind in wales, boasting the fastest public chargers in the country for short charge times.

The 350kW ultra-rapid chargers can top up a car with 800V technology, such as the Kia EV6, in just 18 minutes. To put it another way, they add up to 100-miles of range in 10 minutes. Fast!

Wales’ public charging infrastructure is significantly worse than England and Scotland’s, with just a 3.6% share of the UK’s public chargers according to Zap-Map.

However, this is getting better, with the share estimated to increase to 4.2% by the end of 2022, with an extra 400 to 600 chargers.

β€œOur mission is to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles in the shortest possible timeframes to help prevent the worst impacts of climate change. This is a landmark project for GRIDSERVE and Moto and the first high-power charging facility of its kind for Wales. We’re really excited to be demonstrating that all parts of the UK should be able to embrace the EV revolution. We cannot let a lack of infrastructure prevent drivers from realising the myriad of benefits that come with driving an electric vehicle. This project will help deliver the confidence for more people to make the switch to EVs, as well as support the growing number of people who already have.”

Toddington Harper, CEO of GRIDSERVE.
