The sustainable energy company Gridserve has announced plans to build twenty ultra-high power electric hubs in the UK in 2022.

11 of those electric hubs will be on motorways with 350kW ultra-high power chargers to accommodate the latest generation of 800V charging.

Here are a few project details:

  • Each hub to have 6-12 x 350kW ultra high-power chargers
  • Contactless payments on all chargers
  • CCS and CHAdeMO connectors
  • On-site cafes and waiting lounges

The all-electric forecourts will follow the same basic design as the Braintree hub, which can charge 36 cars simultaneously.

Gridserve plans to build electric hubs across the UK in areas lacking existing infrastructure. In addition to the twenty hubs in 2022, they have dozens more in the pipeline. Some of the hubs might even eclipse this superhub by Pivot Power, which can charge 38 cars simultaneously.

What are electric hubs?

Electric hubs are electric forecourts where EV owners can charge their vehicles at rapid charge speeds. The chargers in operation range from Tesla Superchargers to BP Pulse and Shell Recharge chargers.

Another type of electric hub is the superhub, which has space for more than 30 vehicles to charge simultaneously.

Electric hubs are important because small charger zones tend to have queues, slowing down journeys and souring the EV experience. Also, car charging etiquette is difficult in small zones. With electric hubs, traffic is one way and customers wait in an orderly fashion, ensuring a fair experience.
