Figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that more electric cars sold in March 2022 than in the whole of 2019.

64,165 electric vehiclesΒ were sold last month, up 78.7% from March 2021 and more than the whole of 2019.

These impressive figures show a cultural shift in buyer behaviour, with more drivers than ever embracing electric en masse.

Even more impressive is that EV sales grew at this pace despite the number of new cars registered (including diesel and petrol) hitting the lowest level since March 1998, a figure that has the industry concerned.

The low number of petrol and diesel registrations comes on the back of increasing EV demand and manufacturing constraints. There is a lack of materials and many manufacturers are still recovering from coronavirus lockdowns.

The Bank of England also expects inflation to hit 8% this spring, with motorists holding onto their cars for longer and driving less as a result.
