Following our report at the beginning of November that EV chargers will be mandatory in new build houses from 2022, the Prime Minister has confirmed the same and extended requirements to workplaces today.

Hundreds of thousands of extra charge points are now in the pipeline, with new laws to supercharge the rollout of electric vehicle chargers.

Mandatory EV chargers

The laws will enforce:

  • Mandatory new build supermarket chargers
  • Mandatory new build home chargers
  • Mandatory new build workplace chargers if there are ten parking spaces free
  • Mandatory workplace chargers for renovations if there are ten parking spaces free

Under new laws, new homes, workplace buildings and supermarkets will be required to install electric vehicle chargers. Thanks to these regulations, the Government estimates an additional 145,000 chargers will be installed each year.

The plan aims to ensure that everyone buying a new home will be ready for the electric revolution with no need to buy a smart home charger themselves. It will also ensure that all supermarkets have chargers, no matter their size.

Are there any holes in the plan?

The most contentious decision is that non-residential buildings undergoing large-scale renovations (even those planned years ago) with over ten parking spaces free will be required to install electric vehicle charge points.

Top Charger has also spoken to one of the UK’s largest house buildings, who confirmed customers would absorb costs. In other words, you’re not getting a free home charger with a new home – you will pay for it with a higher sales price.

Aside from those holes, the mandatory plan for EV chargers makes sense. Earlier this month, we reported that the UK is set for a 250,000 EV charger deficit by 2032, but this new plan should more than plug the gap.

Since we were right about the Government announcing plans for mandatory EV chargers in new build homes, we’ll make another prediction – EV taxes will be announced soon.
