Wallbox launches Quasar 2 bi-directional charger

Wallbox Quasar 2 launch and review

Wallbox has announced the Quasar 2 smart charger, its next-generation home charger with V2H (vehicle-to-home) and V2G (vehicle-to-grid) bi-directional charging.

While the Quasar 2 is designed specifically for the North American market, it demonstrates a shift towards bi-directional charging, a feature that could make its way into the successor of the Wallbox Pulsar Plus sold in the UK.

The Quasar 2 charges up to 11.5kW/48Amp and has a Blackout Mode, which lets users use the battery in their EV to power their home (providing the electric vehicle has V2L capabilities).

With the Quasar 2, users can schedule charging sessions at times when rates are low and discharge their car to power their home when rates are high. With some suppliers, this means users can sell energy back to the grid.

“Bidirectional charging opens up numerous opportunities for smarter energy management in the home,” said Enric Asunción, co-founder and CEO of Wallbox. “Quasar 2 represents a breakthrough in the evolution of home energy management. Not only does it allow us to rethink the way we produce, store and use energy on a day-to-day basis, but has the potential to give users the added power and comfort of being able to power their homes for over three days during a power outage.”

Although the Quasar 2 is a North American exclusive, we expect to see new Wallbox charger models for the international market in 2022.
