Are Tesco car chargers free

Tesco jumped on increasing EV uptake in 2019, announcing the introduction of free electric vehicle chargers at 100 of its stores across the UK. This was part of a partnership between Tesco, Volkswagen and Pod Point to build a nationwide charging network. Following the successful rollout, Tesco expanded the program dramatically, with over 600 stores and 2,500 charging points participating by 2023.

However, those free Tesco chargers are long gone – all Tesco car chargers are now paid, and the price you pay depends on the store location.

How much does it cost to charge at Tesco?

As of April 2023, Tesco started charging for EV charging across its network of over 600 stores and 2,500 charging points.

The new rates for Tesco EV charging are:

  • 44p per kWh for 7kW AC chargers.
  • 49p per kWh for 22kW AC chargers.
  • 62p per kWh for 50kW rapid chargers.
  • 69p per kWh for 75kW rapid chargers.

To put this into context, charging a typical family EV with a 100 mile range using a 7kW Tesco charger now costs around £12.

This is a shift from Tesco’s previous policy launched in 2019 of providing free EV charging at 100 stores, in partnership with Volkswagen and Pod Point. However, it is the same policy carried by other supermarkets including Aldi.
